What Is a Velux Loft Conversion?
A Velux (or rooflight) loft conversion is the most straightforward type of conversion. It involves converting your existing loft space into a habitable room without making any changes to the external roof structure. Instead, natural light and ventilation are provided by installing high-quality Velux roof windows directly into the existing roof slope.
Because there are no external alterations, Velux conversions are the quickest and most cost-effective way to add a usable room to your home. They’re also the least disruptive, with most conversions completed in as little as three to four weeks.
Is a Velux Conversion Right for Your Home?
The key requirement for a Velux conversion is sufficient existing headroom in your loft. You’ll need a minimum ridge height of approximately 2.2 metres (measured from the top of the ceiling joists to the underside of the ridge board) for the space to be comfortably usable. Many older properties in Sheffield – particularly Victorian and Edwardian terraces in Nether Edge, Sharrow, and Ecclesall – have generously proportioned loft spaces that are ideal for Velux conversions. We’ll assess your loft during our free survey and advise whether a Velux conversion is feasible, or whether a dormer or other type might be more suitable.
