What Is a Hip to Gable Conversion?
A hip to gable loft conversion involves extending the sloping (hipped) side of your roof outward to create a flat, vertical gable wall. This eliminates the inward slope that reduces usable floor space, resulting in a much larger, more practical loft room.
This type of conversion is most commonly combined with a rear dormer to maximise the total loft space. The combination of a hip to gable extension on one or both sides, plus a rear dormer, can create a loft space large enough for two bedrooms or a large master suite with en-suite and dressing area.
Which Properties Suit a Hip to Gable Conversion?
Hip to gable conversions are ideal for semi-detached and detached properties with hipped roofs. In Sheffield and South Yorkshire, this includes many 1930s and 1950s semi-detached homes in areas such as Dore, Totley, Ecclesall, Hillsborough, and across Rotherham, Doncaster, and Barnsley.
If your home has a roof that slopes inward on one or both sides (rather than ending in a flat vertical wall), a hip to gable conversion could be the ideal solution to unlock your loft’s full potential.
The Build Process
Our team begins by removing the existing hip roof structure on one side of the property and extending the party wall or external wall vertically to form a new gable end. New roof timbers are then installed to create a standard pitched roof over the extended area. In most cases, we combine this with a rear dormer to maximise the total space gained.
The structural work is carefully engineered, and we supply full structural calculations to ensure the new gable wall and roof are fully supported and compliant with Building Regulations.
Planning Permission
In many cases, a hip to gable conversion on a semi-detached or detached home falls within Permitted Development rights, meaning full planning permission is not required. However, there are conditions – the extended roof must not exceed the height of the existing ridge, and there are material and volume limitations. Our team will assess your property and confirm whether planning permission is needed before any work begins.
